A harsh film, much like the landscapes of Russia’s far north that it captures, about one man’s unequal and hopeless struggle against the state.
Car mechanic Nikolai Sergeyev lives with his wife Lilya and his son from a previous marriage in a small northern town by the sea. The corrupt mayor is trying to seize Nikolai’s house and land for his own purposes. After losing two court cases, Nikolai turns for help to his former army friend Dmitri, now a successful lawyer in Moscow. But the arrival of the visitor from the capital only makes Nikolai’s already difficult life more complicated.
