Aivazovsky: The Sea and the Soul

By the end of his life, Ivan Aivazovsky held titles such as Painter of the Chief Naval Staff, Actual Privy Councillor, and Professor of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Yet even rebellious artists of the Peredvizhniki movement “quoted” his seascapes in their works.

Storms, calm seas, gentle ripples, blazing sunsets — these describe not only the moods of the sea, but also the artist’s life journey.
