“An Ordinary Story” — one of the most recognizable productions of the renowned Gogol Center, directed by Kirill Serebrennikov, is coming to Georgia.
Based on the novel by Ivan Goncharov, the performance transforms the St. Petersburg of the 19th century into a modern-day capital. Young heroes of the 1840s speak in the language of the 21st century, making the story powerfully relevant and resonant today.
This production, a true symbol of Gogol Center and a frequent sold-out success, was banned on its home stage following the closure of the theater by Russian authorities. To preserve the work, the play was revived in Belgrade — with all set pieces recreated from scratch and rehearsals restarted, involving both original cast members and leading Serbian actors. Every element retains the unmistakable style of Kirill Serebrennikov — this is precisely the performance audiences remember from the Moscow playbills.
The full troupe is traveling to Georgia — 10 actors and a technical crew of 13, responsible for lighting, sound, props, and original make-up. A special container of set designs is being shipped from Serbia exclusively for these performances.
Director Kirill Serebrennikov is one of the most daring and visionary figures in contemporary theater. He boldly pushes the boundaries of stage, cinema, and opera. His works are staged at major European venues, his films compete at Cannes and Venice Film Festivals, and his leadership of Gogol Center became a symbol of theatrical innovation. Winner of numerous prestigious awards, Serebrennikov creates a distinctive, multilayered artistic language that fuses deep philosophy, striking visuals, and powerful musicality.
