Lecture on Yayoi Kusama

Yayoi Kusama began painting in childhood and never stopped until the very end. Her dots and patterns filled canvases, walls, floors and entire rooms. Gradually, they came to fill the world.

She created provocative performances, occupied public spaces and challenged an art world in which Japanese women — and women in general — were given far too little room.

She did not wait to be invited in. Instead, she created a space of her own — for herself and for the viewer, inviting us to step inside and see the world through her eyes.

This Sunday, we will explore Yayoi Kusama’s life and work, as well as her struggles with the outside world and with herself.

The lecture will be delivered by Darya Nikonova, lecturer, visual culture researcher and cultural events organiser.

Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, and since then has served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Because of its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history, Tbilisi has been a point of contention among various global powers. To this day, the city's location ensures its position as an important transit route for energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, though its population is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian.
