Another dictator has exited the global stage, which means we can now calmly review his rule and assess his actions. We invite you to do this together on Saturday.
Nicolás Maduro is often portrayed as a weak successor to the charismatic Hugo Chávez. Yet it was under Maduro that Venezuela experienced economic collapse, international isolation, an attempt at establishing parallel power structures — and still maintained the same regime for 13 years.
We will also examine:
• Why the protests of 2017–2018 did not lead to a change of power;
• What sustained Maduro’s regime;
• The post-2018 economic shift and the so-called anti-blockade economy;
• Whether the “Cartel of the Suns” actually exists (an alleged network of high-ranking Venezuelan military officials and government figures accused of involvement in drug trafficking).
We will discuss how to survive on the global stage against all odds at our new meeting with Egor Yakovlev @bloodymus — political scientist and historian.
