Why are dictators so easily offended? Why does power often cling to the cult of personality? And how does collective narcissism turn into mass violence?
In this second meeting on narcissism and politics, we’ll broaden the lens — from toxic partners to toxic regimes. We’ll examine how narcissistic logic infiltrates politics, shapes entire nations, and manifests as war, repression, and propaganda.
We’ll explore:
● What is collective narcissism, and how does it construct the image of the enemy?
● Why does an authoritarian leader fear dissent so much?
● Where does violence come from — and what does resentment have to do with it?
● Why are narcissistic regimes especially cruel to women and minorities?
● How can we stay sane, resist, and protect ourselves?
We’ll also discuss the Telegram channel “Proshmandovtsy of Russian Emigration”, which has sparked wide discussion with stories of abuse among political emigrants. For the past month, it’s been a recurring topic in the Russian-speaking community.
We’ll talk about its connection to narcissism — and how to guard ourselves against such violence.
Speakers:
● Selena Valyavkina @selena.psy — psychologist and psychoanalyst
● Maria Makarova @black_cat74 — art manager, theatre producer, and political activist
