Join us for a lecture where we’ll explore the works of Georgia’s most important painters of the early 1900s!
We’ll look at the art of Lado Gudiashvili, Niko Pirosmani, Elene Akhvlediani, Kirill Zdanevich, Dimitri Shevardnadze, David Kakabadze, and other Georgian masters of “modern times.” We’ll talk about Georgia and Europe, fellow artists and contemporaries, shifting daily life, traditional surroundings, and political change.
You’ll learn:
How Pirosmani’s works influenced the course of modern Georgian painting and which artists were most inspired by him
What avant-garde means, how to distinguish it from other styles, and how Georgian avant-gardists stood out among their peers
How Georgian avant-gardists were connected with Russian artists, what the artistic elite’s life was like in Tbilisi in the 1910s–30s, and how it was affected by the state
