Description

On December 15, 2025, at 1:00 PM, at the Tbilisi State University Museum
(Building 1, 1 Ilia Chavchavadze St.),
the publishing house Academic Book (acad.ge), the Society of Assyriologists, Biblicists, and Caucasiologists (SABC), and Tbilisi State University invite you to the presentation of a new volume in the CUNEUM series —
“Laws of the Ancient Near East.”

Translators: Nino Charekvishvili, Maia Gambashidze, Irakli Astakhishvili.

This book offers readers a unique opportunity to directly explore the rich legal heritage of the Ancient Near East and to better understand its role in the development of world law and civilizations. The volume includes the world’s earliest legal texts — the laws of the Ancient Near East, namely:
Sumerian laws (Laws of Ur-Nammu, Laws of Lipit-Ishtar, Laws of X, a Sumerian law exercise tablet, laws on the hire of oxen, a manual of Sumerian legal forms);
Hittite laws;
Babylonian laws (Laws of Eshnunna, Laws of Hammurabi, Neo-Babylonian laws);
and Assyrian laws (Middle Assyrian laws, Middle Assyrian palace decrees).

Most of the texts presented have been translated into Georgian for the first time; others have been revised, with terminology refined and new translations provided.
