Critics are calling this Sorrentino’s best film in many years. The protagonist is a melancholy Italian president (fictional, not real) who must resolve several difficult political issues — such as whether to legalize euthanasia — while being unable to shake thoughts of his late wife and his own inexorably approaching death. The president is played by Toni Servillo, the star of The Great Beauty and Il Divo, and for him this role is a triumph as well.
