On Monday evening, we invite you to a new seminar dedicated to the struggle of post-Soviet countries for freedom.
The history of Kyrgyzstan is a path of resistance and the search for liberty.
The tradition of free nomadism, which clashed with empire, gave rise to a long line of struggle — from the Naryn uprising against Tsarism to the Basmachi movement against communism. Repression and resistance, Soviet modernization and the complex balances of development — all became part of the country’s fate.
After independence, Kyrgyzstan earned the name “the only democracy in Central Asia.” Yet attempts to impose autocracy repeatedly met with public resistance. The years 2005, 2010, and 2020 became landmark moments of popular uprising. Today, the proud nomadic spirit continues to stand its ground.
During the meeting, we will discuss:
• Cultural features of Kyrgyz tradition and its clashes with empires.
• Uprisings and resistance movements in the 19th–20th centuries.
• Soviet modernization and its contradictions.
• Independence and Kyrgyzstan’s democratic experience.
• Protests and resistance to autocracy in the 21st century.
• The lessons Kyrgyz society has shown the world.
The seminar will attempt to view Kyrgyzstan as a country where nomadic freedom is not only a historical tradition, but also a contemporary political choice.
The session will be led by journalist and historian Vadim Lifshits.
