It's not about the war. First of all, this is one of the best films about love. Secondly, it is a rare case when (in our humble opinion) the main character in a melodrama is not a person, but a song.

In the 1950s, an intelligent conductor named Viktor travels through Polish villages, collecting folk songs and singers. Among the talented women, he notices a simple girl named Zula, with whom he becomes entangled in a complicated romance, complicated by political and aesthetic circumstances.

Expressive and elegant drama by Pawel Pawlikowski, known for the brilliant "Ida" (Oscar for "Best Foreign Language Film"). On one hand, it is composed of stereotypes about males and females; on the other hand, it skillfully fits an uncomplicated plot into complex historical circumstances. In total, it turned out to be a poignant film about love during an ideological epidemic, which deservedly won the Best Director award at Cannes.
