An evil witch turns 18-year-old Sophie into an old woman; she casts a spell on her that robs Sophie of her youth. The girl-grandmother flees the town and stumbles upon a remarkable moving castle. The owner of the castle is none other than Howl, a renowned wizard and handsome man, but at the same time a slob, coward, and drama queen. He lives behind the curtains and is insecure about his appearance.
Conceived, in theory, for children, "Howl's Moving Castle" is director Miyazaki's first truly adult-oriented film since "Porco Rosso." Its coziness is deceptive, and its beauty is decadent and unsettling.
The design of the walking castle was inspired by the hut on chicken legs from Russian folk tales.
