On Saturday afternoon, we invite you to a seminar dedicated to a writer included by Time in its list of the “100 Heroes and Icons of the 20th Century.”
Ulysses by James Joyce is (rightfully) considered one of the most complex and important novels of the last century. It is a kind of “moonstone” (in the words of Stefan Zweig) that cannot be ignored.
However, in this session we will attempt to place Joyce in a broader context — namely, his movement from clarity to darkness: from the Chekhovian brevity of Dubliners to the dense, almost monstrous complexity of Finnegans Wake. Somewhere between these poles lies “Ulysses.”
Intellectualism and carnivalesque, Jesuit debates and Greek myth, polyphony and stream of consciousness — all of this comes together in a bold and virtuosic text that is at once both clear and obscure.
Join us to explore one of the key literary works of the 20th century.
The session will be led by Nikita Nemtsev — writer, musician, and essayist, MA in Philology (RSUH).
