Jesus Christ Superstar: Millennium Version

The famous rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, written in 1970. It is based on events from the Gospels, but also serves as a story about the place and role of a rock star in show business. The New Testament narrative is interpreted here quite freely and unorthodoxly (yet with deep respect for believers).

Today, there are countless productions in different countries and languages (as well as the 1973 film — which, in our opinion, is rather weak). But this particular version comes closest to the original vision of Rice and Webber (by their own admission). The Gospel story is placed in a contemporary setting, as originally intended. Instead of the Israeli desert, the action unfolds on a theatrical stage against graffiti-covered urban backdrops. Nothing remains of the hippie aesthetics of the 1970s — a new era demanded new theatrical imagery.
