The first feature-length narrative film by the great avant-garde filmmaker Chantal Akerman, two of whose works (Jeanne Dielman and Meetings with Anna) we have already screened as part of my film club. Shot in black and white, it became a notable landmark of 1970s art cinema.
A sparse, low-key drama about a woman named Julie (played by Akerman herself), who locks herself in a room and tries to survive a breakup with her lover: she rearranges furniture, writes and rewrites letters, and eats nothing but sugar straight from a paper bag. Sooner or later, however, the sugar runs out — and that means Julie will have to leave the apartment.
👩🦰 After the screening, we’ll brew some tea and share impressions. The discussion will be led by me — philosopher, film scholar, and cinema owner Varya Vlasova.
