Isle of Dogs

Wes Anderson’s stop-motion dystopia — at once funny, sad, and unbelievably beautiful — tells a story about friendship, loneliness, and political paranoia.

In the near future, the authorities of the Japanese city of Megasaki banish all dogs to a gigantic garbage dump known as Isle of Dogs under the pretext of a “canine flu” epidemic. Twelve-year-old Atari travels there in search of his dog Spots and unexpectedly finds an entire pack of grumpy, hungry, but still deeply loyal dogs.

As always with Anderson, beneath the perfectly composed symmetry, humor, and toy-like aesthetic lies a deeply human story — about fear of outsiders, manipulation by those in power, and the need to matter to someone.
