INTO THE WILD

Sean Penn’s INTO THE WILD is based on the real life of Christopher McCandless, whose decision to abandon conventional society and travel alone across the United States has been widely discussed, debated, and mythologised. The film follows his journey toward Alaska, but critics often noted that its real focus lies in the ideas driving that decision, questions of freedom, rejection of material life, and the search for meaning outside established structures.

Much of the film’s impact comes from the way it frames that journey. Penn places McCandless within vast, often unforgiving landscapes, where isolation becomes both liberating and dangerous. There's a real tensino between the film’s romantic pull and its underlying critique, as moments of beauty and self-discovery sit alongside increasing physical risk and misjudgement.

What has kept the film relevant is the conversation it provokes. McCandless can been read as both an idealist and a cautionary figure, and the film does not fully resolve that contradiction. I’ve chosen to show it at FOMO because so many of my guests have requested, and it offers a powerful experience shaped by landscape, performance, and philosophy, while leaving space for you to decide how to interpret the life at its centre.
