England in the Tudor era. The country is ruled by Henry VIII, the prototype of Bluebeard, known for his cruelty towards wives, two of whom were beheaded. Catherine Parr, an aristocrat of exceptional intellect and strong character, becomes his sixth wife and realizes the risk of her position.
