Description

Horseback Tour to Dusheti (Mtskheta–Mtianeti)

A new and very immersive tour that will leave no guest indifferent. It will be especially interesting for those who have already joined our horseback tours before!

The tour is led by a native Tbilisi resident with over 10 years of experience in excursions, hiking, and travel. A dynamic, engaging, and certified guide.

What awaits us:

  • Shio-Mgvime Monastery — a legendary medieval monastic architectural complex near Mtskheta.
Located in a narrow limestone gorge on the northern bank of the Mtkvari River, this is a truly picturesque place. The monastic community was founded over 1,500 years ago and still exists today.

  • A short walk to an interesting church

  • Horseback riding in Dusheti — in the area where, according to historical sources, Alexander Pushkin once stayed.
A calm 1-hour ride on gentle horses

  • Zhinvali Reservoir
You will learn the history of its creation — beneath the water lie more than a dozen flooded Georgian villages from the era of Queen Tamar. Some of them reappear when the water level drops (as it does now).

  • Ananuri Fortress — the main historical landmark on the Georgian Military Highway, a true “history carved in stone.”
It is the only fortress in Georgia preserved in its original form. We’ll learn about the glorious past of the Aragvi eristavi (dukes).

Location

Tbilisi
Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of around 1.2 million people. Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, and since then has served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Because of its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history, Tbilisi has been a point of contention among various global powers. To this day, the city's location ensures its position as an important transit route for energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, though its population is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian.
