For 25 years, Giorgi Melikishvili (internationally known under the pseudonym George Mel) has accompanied some of the world’s finest songwriters across a variety of styles and cultures — including Esperanza Spalding, KJ Denhert, Raul Midon, Javier Ruibal, David Wilcox, and John Hall, among many others.
As New York City Jazz Record describes him, he is “a veteran of New York’s jazz and world music scene.” Drummer/percussionist/composer/singer-songwriter George Mel steps forward in his new project (G.I.A. Project), leaving behind his usual supporting role to present an entirely different performance: a genre-diverse solo concert as a vocalist and songwriter (with guitar, cajón, and vocals; occasionally joined by a rhythm section, backing vocalist, or guest soloists).
His program includes both original songs and interpretations of selected masterpieces by great musicians — from contemporary to classical eras, from all over the world. George Mel sings in five languages, performs on guitar in five different tunings, and creates music that truly reflects the spirit of a Globally Inspired Artist (G.I.A.).
