GARBAGE KIDS

GARBAGE KIDS follows Ulla, Nika and Luka, the Georgian-Estonian collective behind Garbage Kids. All three trained as architects, but instead of working within conventional design and production systems, they build one-of-a-kind furniture and objects from foraged wood, discarded materials and whatever else they can find.

Director David Lobzhanidze follows the group as they prepare for an exhibition in Tallinn. The film spends time inside their workshop and creative process, watching ideas develop through experimentation, improvisation and a close relationship with the materials themselves.

What begins as a film about furniture gradually becomes a portrait of three people trying to work on their own terms. The Garbage Kids are interested in objects that already have a history, materials other people have overlooked, and forms of making that sit outside industrial production. Their work is practical, playful and sometimes unpredictable, but there is a clear philosophy behind it.

The film itself was made in much the same spirit. GARBAGE KIDS is a completely independent production, created in association with Litagora, the Tbilisi-based video and documentary platform founded by director David Lobzhanidze and producer Salome Lezhava.

For its first public screening in Tbilisi, David, Salome and members of Garbage Kids will join us at FOMO for a live discussion after the film. We’ll talk about the documentary, the collective, their approach to design and the filmmaking process.

Afterwards we’ll head upstairs to the rooftop terrace for drinks and music and conversation.
