London in the 1960s. Debauchery, drugs, guitars being smashed to pieces, and sexual freedom. Fashion photographer Thomas (Hemmings) captures a kissing couple in the park and, upon enlarging the photo, discovers that beneath the idyllic image lies a crime. After a visit from the woman (Redgrave) he met in the park at his home, the film goes missing, and all of Thomas's attempts to uncover the truth lead to nothing. Was there a crime? Or was it just fantasy? Is it better to pretend that nothing happened? Reality slips away like sand through fingers.
The film received good publicity thanks to its musical accompaniment, specifically a scene featuring a concert by the British rock group The Yardbirds, in which Jeff Beck smashes his guitar on stage (initially, Antonioni wanted to film this scene with The Who, but it didn't work out).
Winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
