Charlie suffers from morbid obesity and heart disease but refuses treatment because of hopelessness and the lack of medical insurance. Ashamed of his body, he never leaves his apartment, orders food delivery, and teaches English to students via video calls without turning on the camera. The only visitors he receives are nurse Liz and a young missionary, Thomas, who believes it is his duty to save the lost soul of his patient.
Above all, Charlie longs to rebuild his relationship with his teenage daughter. Eight years earlier, he left Ellie and her mother to live with his lover. But Alan could not endure the inner conflict between forbidden love and his religious beliefs and took his own life. Struggling with grief, Charlie began consuming food in excessive amounts. Eventually, he manages to meet his daughter and offers her money to continue seeing him without her mother’s knowledge. In response, Ellie sets her own conditions.
The film focuses on the inner world of a person trying to cope with despair — a theme that deeply resonates with the actor’s personal story.
