The action of the film takes place in 1940, during the Second World War, when England suffers from constant bombing. The main character, Thomas Shelby, lives in isolation from his family and society, spending time writing memoirs in his neglected estate. He is haunted by memories of former crimes and visions of his dead daughter Ruby. It turns out that Thomas' brother Artur, who is officially considered a suicide, was actually killed by him during a drunken brawl. The feeling of guilt and bitterness of the loss force the leader of "Ostrykh kozyrkov" to completely remove himself from the case. When the German air force inflicts a devastating blow on the ammunition factory in Birmingham, Thomas's sister Ada, who has become a member of parliament, tries to return her brother to active activities, but he does not want to return to the world of violence. In his absence, Duke Shelby, the illegitimate son of Thomas, takes over the management of the gang.
