Film Club at Auditoria: Screening & Discussion of Cold War (Paweł Pawlikowski, 2018)

Join us for a screening of one of the most acclaimed European dramas of recent years — Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cold War.

The film won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival, received four European Film Awards, and earned three Academy Award nominations — for Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director, and Best Cinematography.

Set in post-war Poland, the story follows Wiktor, a conductor traveling through rural villages in search of folk musicians. There he meets the talented Zula, and an intense love story begins — one that will be tested by political upheaval, distance, and their own personal contradictions.

After the screening, we’ll discuss Pawlikowski’s filmmaking, his distinctive visual style and the cinematography of Łukasz Żal, the role of music and folklore in the story, and the complex relationship between Wiktor and Zula.

We’ll also explore how the characters’ personal story becomes intertwined with the history of Europe — and why the title Cold War refers to much more than the political confrontation between the Soviet Union and the West.
