New York, 1952. Twenty-three-year-old ambitious and talented table tennis player Marty Mauser works temporarily as a shoe salesman to save money for a ticket to the United Kingdom. His goal is to become the first American to win the British Open. His boss offers him a promotion to manager, but Marty dreams only of a championship title and fame. When he discovers that his boss has left for the weekend without paying his monthly salary, Marty forces a colleague at gunpoint to open the safe and give him the money he is owed, quits his job, and heads to London to compete in the tournament…
