Expedition to Samtskhe-Javakheti
“The Floor Is Lava”
Three days of wildlife, geology, birdwatching, mountains, ancient fortresses, and scientific exploration.
Day 1 — Goderdzi Pass, Fossil Forest & Vardzia
Departure from Batumi at 08:00–09:00.
Our route begins through the breathtaking Goderdzi Pass — alpine meadows, tiny mountain houses, beech forests, and endless panoramic views.
Along the way, we stop at the fossil forest, where you can see tree trunks estimated to be 6–14 million years old.
Lunch on the road: homemade quiches and aromatic herbal tea.
Next, we visit a fascinating mineral zone, where we’ll try to find natural crystals. With some luck, we may even spot Caucasian agama sunbathing on the rocks.
We then drive through a spectacular canyon to Vardzia.
Guests may optionally visit the cave monastery (15 GEL, not included, visit time: 1 hour) or join a short nature walk nearby.
We will also make short stops at:
Khertvisi Fortress
Rabati Castle
In the evening we arrive at the hotel, followed by dinner (not included) and a nature lecture by Alina.
Day 2 — Birdwatching at Three Lakes
After breakfast, we head to the lakes to observe Pelican and other water birds.
We will learn the basics of birdwatching, while experienced birders can add new species to their life lists and capture amazing photographs.
We’ll have:
spotting camera with telephoto lens
binocular rental available
Together, we’ll keep a field journal like real scientists.
Lake Stops:
Saghamo Lake — birdwatching and lunch with lake views
Paravani Lake — the largest lake in Georgia
We’ll also pass through Poka village.
Day 2 — Geological Hike
Later, we head on a short hike in search of:
Obsidian
volcanic bombs
Our naturalist guide will explain the geological structure of Georgia and teach how to distinguish rocks from minerals.
Distance: 5 km
Elevation gain: 250 m
Evening: dinner, conversations, and bird-themed board games.
Day 3 — Tabatskuri Lake
After breakfast, we head toward Tabatskuri Lake.
This protected area is the only nesting site in Georgia for Velvet Scoter.
We’ll observe water birds and continue our journey home.
Lunch at a café, dinner on the road.
Return to Batumi at approximately 21:00.
