The exhibition "Neoclassicism – A Return to the Ideal" will showcase Vasily Shukhaev’s paintings and graphic works from various periods of his artistic career, as well as archival documents and a catalogue detailing his life and work.
Vasily (Vasil) Shukhaev arrived in Georgia in 1947 with his wife, after being released from exile in Magadan, upon invitation from the A. Griboedov State Drama Theatre. As noted in the exhibition announcement:
Tbilisi and Georgia became not just a place of forced relocation, but a country that allowed the artist to continue living and creating. Despite all difficulties, Shukhaev never considered leaving Georgia. Tbilisi was his choice, and Georgia became his second homeland.
Shukhaev lived in Georgia for 28 years. In Tbilisi, he was actively involved in both artistic and educational activities. In 1954, his solo exhibition was held here.
After Shukhaev’s death, his widow Vera Shukhaeva, in accordance with his will, donated about 100 of his works to the Georgian Museum of Fine Arts. Through this generous gesture, Vasily Shukhaev expressed his gratitude to the country that became his home.
