Description

The tour will be led by the wonderful Georgi, the most intelligent and respectable Georgian we know. He is a historian by education, with 15 years of experience as a guide. He collaborates with major tour companies in Georgia and the CIS, working across the country.

First, we’ll visit the restored Rabati Fortress in Akhaltsikhe, which houses a historical and ethnographic museum. The museum displays samples of ancient weapons, tools, household items discovered in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, as well as medieval manuscripts and ethnographic materials.

Then we’ll head to Samtskhe-Javakheti, where one of Georgia’s main cultural monuments is located – the massive cave monastery complex of Vardzia. It was founded in the 12th-13th centuries during the reign of Queen Tamar, and in 2007, Vardzia was included in the UNESCO tentative list. This grand complex features over 600 rooms, including churches, chapels, cells, refectories, storage rooms, and even tunnels, all carved into the rock.

We’ll also visit many other interesting and unique places in southern Georgia, including fortresses and other landmarks.

Lunch will be at a good café (not included in the price).

Tbilisi
Tbilisi, Georgia
Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of around 1.2 million people. Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, and since then has served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Because of its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history, Tbilisi has been a point of contention among various global powers. To this day, the city's location ensures its position as an important transit route for energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, though its population is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian.
