Description

Easy Hike to the Frozen Geysers

Difficulty: 3/10
Distance: 6 km
Elevation gain: ±150 m

Weather forecast: −3°C, partly cloudy, possible wind.

We will travel to Paravani Lake, where we will take a short and easy route to three frozen geysers several meters high.

The hike takes place at an altitude of over 2000 meters above sea level across the Tsalka Plateau. The plateau was formed as a result of ancient volcanic activity: molten rock once spread across the surface and, after cooling, formed a vast basalt landscape.

Along the way we will see numerous ancient volcanic cones scattered across the plateau — reminders of the volcanic past of this region.

At the beginning of the route, you can optionally take a large ATV (quad bike) for an additional fee that will take you closer to the destination.

Important to bring:

  • Water and food for lunch

  • Comfortable, warm clothing and footwear

  • Scarf, hat, and sunglasses to protect from wind and sun

  • Sunscreen — the sun is stronger at high altitude, especially when reflected from snow

Location

Tbilisi
Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of around 1.2 million people. Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, and since then has served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Because of its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history, Tbilisi has been a point of contention among various global powers. To this day, the city's location ensures its position as an important transit route for energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, though its population is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian.
