Based on a story by Haruki Murakami. Theater director Yusuke, who has experienced the sudden loss of his wife, is invited to stage Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya." As part of the contract, he is prohibited from driving, so the festival provides him with a driver—a quiet and silent girl named Misaki. His acquaintance with her becomes an opportunity to reconsider his past relationships.
"Drive My Car" combines the simplicity of Murakami's story and the sentimentality of Hamaguchi with material from Chekhov that is seamlessly integrated. Despite its lengthy runtime, it is truly an intimate film about ordinary people and their unnoticed yet equally important feelings.
"Oscar" for Best International Feature Film and the "Palme d'Or" for Best Screenplay.
