The main character of the film is Mookie (played by Spike himself), a simple pizza delivery man who stoically endures all the humiliations from his boss's son, particularly towards African Americans. But one day, Mookie's patience runs out and he rebels.
Meet Spike Lee, America's leading black director. Jim Jarmusch once said in an interview, "In twenty years, when Spike becomes the Minister of Culture, I will make films about the oppression of white rights."
"Do the Right Thing" is Spike's most famous film, instantly making him a star. Today, this film is also considered prophetic, as it partly predicted the events that sparked the "Black Lives Matter" movement. But we love it not only for the author's social stance, but also because it is truly charming, funny, yet at the same time sad and angry cinema – like a Brooklyn comedy that unexpectedly turns into a harsh drama. In short, Spike Lee is wonderful and does everything right.
Golden Globe for Best Screenplay and Best Director, nomination for the Palme d'Or, 2 Oscar nominations.
