The film tells the story of an hour and a half in the life of a popular young singer, Cleo, who spends it in Paris waiting for the results of tests related to her possible cancer diagnosis.
In the film, well-known figures of the French New Wave, such as Jean-Luc Godard, Anna Karina, Eddie Constantine, and Jean-Claude Brialy, appeared in small roles as silent film actors. The role of the composer was played by Michel Legrand, who also composed the music for the film.
The film was included in the competition program of the 1962 Cannes International Film Festival. In 1963, Varda also received the award from the French Syndicate of Film Critics for Best Film.
