The Chernobyl disaster on April 26, 1986 became a symbol not just of an accident, but of a systemic failure. This tragic event in world history will soon mark its 40th anniversary.
On Saturday evening, we invite you to a discussion about a catastrophe that seems to have been examined from every angle and depicted in numerous documentaries and films.
Together, we will try to answer the central question: was it an accident… or an inevitable outcome?
We will discuss:
• What really happened at Reactor Unit 4?
• Why was the RBMK reactor design fatally dangerous?
• Who is to blame: the operators, the design, or the system?
• What did the first hours look like — without heroization or myths?
• What did the authorities hide, and why?
• What was the cost of the cleanup: people, health, money, truth?
• Why did Pripyat become a “dead city” within 48 hours?
• How did Chernobyl change the USSR… and accelerate its collapse?
Join us to learn more about a history we have lived through, yet still do not fully understand.
The session will be led by Egor Yakovlev — historian and political scientist (@bloodymus)
