A drama about a French old manor house inherited by an indifferent, greedy Muscovite. The film tells about how the old world gives way to the new world, in which there is no place for old sentimentality but a place for calculation. The old world has no chance, it's not for nothing that here and there the sounds of the radio are wedged into the film, which reports this or that cataclysm caused by modern progress. The old ladies living in the manor have no place in the modern world, and therefore they must either leave or fall victim to it.
The film received several film awards, including the Italian Film Critics Award named after F. Pasinetti at the Venice Film Festival and the Andrei Tarkovsky Foundation Award at the XVIII International Film Festival in Moscow.
