Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, known professionally as Black Coffee, is a globally recognized, versatile artist and visionary in the electronic music scene. Born on March 11, 1976, in Durban, South Africa, his music is deeply rooted in the rich and diverse musical heritage of his homeland.
Black Coffee’s signature sound blends traditional African rhythms, jazz, and the South African-born house music movement. After years of dedication and experimentation, he has mastered both DJing and music production. He studied at a prestigious jazz school, where he gained a deep understanding of music theory and composition.
His international breakthrough came through performances at global festivals and iconic venues. His high-energy and emotionally charged DJ sets — defined by infectious beats and deep melodies — have earned him audiences around the world.
Collaborations with artists like Pharrell Williams, Alicia Keys, and Usher have further solidified his place in the global electronic scene. A milestone in his career was his sold-out show at Madison Square Garden in 2023, featuring a 360-degree stage setup, a 12-piece orchestra, and special guests — a performance that reaffirmed his unique creative vision.
In 2022, he became the first South African artist to win a Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album.
