On Thursday evening, we invite you to a screening of the documentary film “Between Home and Self.”
This is the story of Belarusian LGBTQ+ people who, after the events of 2020, were forced to leave their country and start their lives anew. The film follows two queer individuals, Zhenya and Jane, and through their personal experiences shows what it means to live between a home one cannot return to and the attempt to build safety and a future in a new country.
“Between Home and Self” is a deeply personal, honest, and vulnerable conversation about fear and pressure, dignity and solidarity, and the search for one’s place in the world when familiar reality collapses. It is a story not only about two individuals but about an entire community that continues to live and support one another in exile.
The film was produced by the Belarusian human rights organization “Legal Initiative,” whose special project is the International Committee for the Investigation of Torture in Belarus, in collaboration with representatives of the LGBTQ+ community. Despite its камерный (intimate) format and a small production team, the film has already gained international attention, with screenings held in Lithuania, Poland, Moldova, and Spain.
A discussion will follow the screening. A representative of the International Committee for the Investigation of Torture in Belarus and a member of the film crew will attend the event. She will speak about the current situation of repression in Belarus and answer your questions.
We invite everyone who cares about human rights, safety, and solidarity. This is an opportunity not only to watch the film but also to discuss the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in exile — in Georgia and beyond.
