Description

The play “Quartet” (or “Only the Lovers Remained Alive,” or “A Mysterious Room Within”) was born in June 2025 as part of the open laboratory of Berserks, initiated by the Haraki Theatre Company, and now continues as an independent production.
Join us on October 21–22 at 20:00.

Quartet is a reflection on the problem of terrorism, using material that seems, on the surface, to have nothing to do with it.
I tried to reveal the essence of violence hidden at the core of gender relations and to break the cliché of a single, true morality.”
— Heiner Müller, from his 1981 commentary in the West German magazine Filmkritik.

The GDR party authorities banned the nearly staged production at Deutsches Theater, explaining:

“Sometimes we need to protect Müller from himself.”

Like many other plays banned in East Germany, Quartet was first staged in Bochum Theater in West Germany and has since become one of the most frequently performed works in Western European — particularly German-language — theatre.
