Description

Following the sold-out event on June 28, we're bringing back our ART Breakfast, inspired by Tate Modern's acclaimed exhibition Frida: The Making of an Icon.

Frida Kahlo lived only 47 years, created around 200 artworks, and could hardly have imagined that decades later her face would become one of the most recognizable cultural symbols in the world.

Today, Frida is simultaneously celebrated as an extraordinary artist, political activist, symbol of Mexico, film icon, feminist figure, and one of the most successful cultural brands of the twentieth century.

During this ART Breakfast, we will take an in-depth look at Tate Modern's latest exhibition—its concept, curatorial vision, structure, and key masterpieces.

Together, we will explore how an artist who often lived in the shadow of Diego Rivera became a global cultural phenomenon and why her life story continues to resonate in contemporary popular culture.

Our discussion will cover:

🎨 Frida Kahlo's life and artistic journey;

❤️ her complex relationship with Diego Rivera;

🇲🇽 the influence of the Mexican Revolution and communist ideology;

📚 the political environment shared by Frida, Diego Rivera, and Leon Trotsky;

👗 traditional Mexican clothing and jewelry that became essential elements of her artistic identity.

We'll also examine Frida's most iconic paintings, uncover the hidden symbols and meanings within her work, and view her legacy through the perspective of Tate Modern's curators.

Finally, we'll explore the phenomenon of "Fridamania":

How did Frida Kahlo become a global pop culture icon? And where is the line between timeless art and an internationally recognized cultural brand?

Location

Tbilisi
Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of around 1.2 million people. Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, and since then has served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Because of its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history, Tbilisi has been a point of contention among various global powers. To this day, the city's location ensures its position as an important transit route for energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, though its population is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian.
