High school student Shoya Ishida suddenly realizes that he turned the life of his classmate Shoko into hell just because she was deaf. When she transfers schools, he becomes the target of bullying and endures it silently out of guilt. The situation becomes so heavy for him that he contemplates suicide, but his friends come to his aid and help him cope.

A challenging but hopeful story about overwhelming guilt and the healing power of friendship, touching on themes of school bullying, teenage depression, and limited health opportunities. Yamada and her team created a visually rich narrative to show how difficult it can be to understand and accept not only others but also oneself.
