One of the main films by Andrei Tarkovsky and one of the greatest masterpieces of world cinema in general. This is the fantasy life of the author of the "Trinity" icon painter Andrei Rublev (little is known about his real life). It is about Russia during the time of the Tatar-Mongol invasions in the early 15th century and about the freedom of creativity in cruel wartime.
In the Soviet Union, the film faced harsh criticism and censorship for its darkness, anti-historicity, unpatriotic nature, and also for its cruel treatment of animals (this is true). It appeared in Soviet cinemas only five years later, after it was shown at Cannes, bypassing officials, and became a world sensation.
It is also a film about silence. And also about how, after all the horrors of war, grass and flowers will break through the scorched earth.
