During World War II in Belgrade, underground anti-fascist fighters organized an entire weapons factory. The war has long ended, but they continue their activities. Throughout these years, life goes on above ground, while children are born in the underground who have never seen sunlight.
"Underground" is considered the pinnacle of Kusturica's work. It was highly successful at the Cannes Film Festival and was hailed as epochal. The director, who was only forty at the time, was essentially elevated to the ranks of European cinema classics. Critic Gérard Lefort described the film as "Churchill's famous speech 'I promise you blood, sweat, and tears' set to the music of the Sex Pistols."
