"It's Complicated". Genetics is the very area where this particular phrase can serve as a real answer to any question. The area that does not tolerate simplifications learned at school. And simplifications can be too expensive.
Over the years of popularizing genetics, more than once I have had to respond to a variety of arguments from supporters of the “proper family.” In this lecture I tried to combine all the conservative arguments and answer them from the position of modern knowledge of biology.
Diving into genetics, let's figure it out:
how the sex of humans (and other animals) works,
why sex ≠ gender,
XX boys and XY girls - a space of options created by nature
do we choose who we feel attracted to? Does nature or environment decide for us?
Is our orientation embedded in our genes? But how did it get past all the difficulties of natural selection?
