Description

Along Georgia’s Main Historical Route: Mtskheta – Jvari – Shio-Mgvime Monastery

We travel along the most important route in Georgia: Mtskheta – Jvari Monastery – Shio-Mgvime Monastery.

Mtskheta is a city of special importance in Georgian history and in the heart of every Georgian. This is where the key events related to the Christianization of Georgia took place, and where UNESCO World Heritage sites are located.

During the trip we will:

  • learn the story of Georgia’s adoption of Christianity

  • see great Christian relics with our own eyes

  • visit two ancient temples: Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral

  • admire panoramic views of the confluence of the Kura River and Aragvi River

  • stroll through Mtskheta with its cobbled streets, souvenir shops, and red-tiled roofs, and taste what many consider the best churchkhela in Georgia

We will also visit Shio-Mgvime, a medieval monastic architectural complex located in a narrow limestone gorge on the northern bank of the Mtkvari River, in an exceptionally picturesque setting.

Trip bonus: a short hike to a small mountain church near Shio-Mgvime, offering stunning views.
Lunch: at a riverside café with a suspension bridge.

Location

Tbilisi
Tbilisi is the capital and the largest city of Georgia, lying on the banks of the Kura River with a population of around 1.2 million people. Tbilisi was founded in the fifth century AD by Vakhtang I of Iberia, and since then has served as the capital of various Georgian kingdoms and republics. Because of its location at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and its proximity to the lucrative Silk Road, throughout history, Tbilisi has been a point of contention among various global powers. To this day, the city's location ensures its position as an important transit route for energy and trade projects. Tbilisi's history is reflected in its architecture, which is a mix of medieval, neoclassical, Beaux Arts, Art Nouveau, Stalinist, and Modern structures. Historically, Tbilisi has been home to people of multiple cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, though its population is overwhelmingly Eastern Orthodox Christian.
