Einstein and Margarita

In 1935, the Princeton Institute commissioned a sculptural portrait of Albert Einstein by Russian emigrant Sergei Konenkov. The sculptor's wife Margarita then met the famous physicist and turned out to be his only love for many years. Two extraordinary people found themselves together in a difficult situation in such a historical era. In the new play by the Soviet and Russian playwright Alexander Gelman, "Almar", the action takes place in Einstein's house, on the night when Konenkova arrives there.  Outside the window, August 1945, the United States had just dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Einstein, who fled to America from the Nazis and the impending war, is acutely worried about everything that is happening and blames himself for being involved in the creation of nuclear weapons by the Americans. Margarita informs him that a week later, after many years of living in America, she and her husband are going back to the Soviet Union. Forever. Einstein will try to persuade her to stay, but in vain – separation is inevitable. Margarita will leave for the Soviet Union, and Einstein will write piercing letters to her in Moscow.  On a quiet night in the modest home of a scientist in Princeton, terrible words will be uttered and a terrible secret will be revealed...
