A Serious Man

A tragicomedy about a man trying to find meaning in a world where everything he believed to be stable suddenly begins to fall apart.

Minnesota, 1967. Larry Gopnik is a physics professor, a devoted family man, and someone who has always tried to live by the rules. But his orderly life starts unraveling: his wife leaves him for another man, his career is threatened by anonymous letters, and one misfortune follows another. Desperate for answers, Larry turns to a series of rabbis, only to receive increasingly strange responses. The harder he tries to understand why all this is happening, the clearer it becomes that perhaps there is no explanation at all.

*A Serious Man* is one of the Coen brothers' most personal and enigmatic films — a blend of Jewish parable, black comedy, and the absurdity of everyday life, telling the story of a man who sincerely wants to understand how the world works but cannot seem to find its instruction manual.
