Bright and memorable vaudeville with a stunning cast. On the eve of Christmas, the owner of the estate is killed. Eight women from his closest circle of acquaintances are suspected, each has a motive for murder, and each keeps her own secrets. And each has a personal musical number prepared. 8 women, 8 songs.
Formally, it is a family detective story centered around the murder of a man surrounded only by women: a sister, a wife, daughters, and maids. The musical numbers in the style of mid-20th-century French musicals emphasize the spirit of the 1950s, and Catherine Deneuve, Fanny Ardant, Isabelle Huppert, and other actresses shine on screen like diamonds on a sunny day. But Ozon's ironic film for the audience, as always, has a second layer: what is really hidden behind our perfectly rehearsed roles?
The film received two Silver Bears at the Berlin Film Festival,: one awarded to Ozon himself, and the other to the entire ensemble cast.
